The joint International Institute of Humanitarian Law (IIHL)- Istituto per gli Studi di Politica Internazionale (ISPI) organize “Advanced Diploma on International Humanitarian Law and Peace Operations.

Advanced Diploma on International Humanitarian Law and Peace Operations

The aim of the Advanced Diploma is to provide participants with the necessary legal knowledge to work in the complex and specific context of international peace operations. Attention will be focused on both theoretical and practical aspects of the complex scenarios of peace operations, with particular emphasis on basic principles and rules of International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights Law and new developing concepts and emerging norms applicable in this field. In order to obtain the Advanced Diploma students must attend five courses (3 in classroom + 2 distance learning) and successfully submit an essay for the assessment.

In-class Courses (31 January - 5 February 2011):

• International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights in Peace Operations: Principles, Rules and legal framework
• Civil-military Relations in Peace Operations
• Protection of Civilians and the Concept of “Responsibility to Protect”

Distance Learning Courses:

• International Humanitarian Law and Non-State Actors
• Enforcing Respect for IHL and Human Rights in Peace Operations

All classes will be held in English. The in-class courses will take place at ISPI, via Clerici 5, Milan, Italy. For distance learning courses participants will receive a username and a password for the access to the platform.

REQUIREMENTS
The Advanced Diploma is open to those who have a relevant academic or field experience of Humanitarian Law or Peace Operations.
The Advanced Diploma is also appropriate for those who have successfully completed an ISPI Diploma in "Emergencies and Humanitarian Intervention". A good knowledge of English is required of all participants as all materials and all courses will be in English.

HOW TO APPLY
To enroll to the Advanced Diploma send your CV by email to valeria.sciacovelli@ispionline.it or by fax to +39-02-863.313.221 – by 20 December 2010. If the application is accepted, applicants will be notified by email. Payment of the course fee should then be sent within 7 days. It is possible to pay at ISPI's administrative office: via Clerici 5, Milan, Italy (Monday-Friday, 2pm-5pm) or by Bank Transfer (the details of which are on the application form that will be sent to accepted applicants). It is necessary to send a copy of the transfer receipt by email to valeria.sciacovelli@ispionline.it or by fax to +39-02-863.313.221. The office will then acknowledge the enrolment by email or by phone.

The Advanced Diploma has limited places available, and will only take place if an adequate number of enrolments is reached.
Confirmation of the course running will be given by email seven days before the first in-class course starts.

COSTS
Cost of the Advanced Diploma, including educational materials, is 850 euro. Please note that neither ISPI or the IIHL offer scholarships for this Advanced Diploma.
